Bayern Munich legend Phillip Lahm has hit out at PSG after they were knocked out of the Champions League round of 16.
Germany and Bayern Munich legend Philipp Lahm has delivered a brutal assessment of Paris Saint Germain.
The defending Ligue 1 champions were defeated home and away by Bayern in the Champions League round of 16, with the Parisians hardly putting up a real fight in both ties.
Lahm who won the treble with Bayern Munich and the World Cup with Germany has now delivered his thoughts on France’s most expensive team.
'PSG can make you sad'
According to Lahm’s new "Zeit" column via BILD, the 39-year-old did not hold back in his assessment of the star-studded French side.
Right at the beginning of his text, Lahm says:
"PSG can make you sad. In Munich you didn't see anything of the class that this team should have because of their outstanding players. It was a disappointment, on the one hand. On the other hand, you weren't surprised, because PSG are knocked out of the Champions League early happens all the time."
PSG have reached the Champions League final only once since the start of the Qatar investment, and that was in 2020 under Thomas Tuchel.
The Parisians ended up with a narrow 1-0 loss against Bayern.
However, there was high hopes for the Parisians once more after they reached the semi-finals in 2021.
But they were ultimately knocked out by Manchester City.
Prior to that time, the French giants have either stopped at the knockout round (five times) or quarter-finals (four times).
Philip Lahm drops damning verdict on Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe
Lahm also made an honest assessment of two of the highest-paid stars at the club.
"PSG is not a team. Kylian Mbappé is a story in itself. He undoubtedly has world-class skills, taking national championships with him in passing. But his talent is not embedded."he said.
"In Munich, he was just waiting for the ball to fall in front of his feet. I lack any imagination as to how Mbappé's career will flourish in Paris." he added.
2022 World Cup winner Lionel Messi was not also left out in the verdict.
"Messi also showed his extra class in moments in Munich. But his skills are used without purpose, goal or direction. The individual at PSG simply does not know how to score a goal together and what he should contribute. Messi was helpless and desperate." he said, before going on to liken the Parisian team to a luxury department store.
"This exorbitantly expensive team resembles a luxury department store that exhibits the most valuable exhibits that are admired by everyone, but that no one can afford."
Paris Saint Germain’s 2022-23 season so far
PSG have once again underwhelmed in Europe this season with the club currency facing a number of issues.
Lionel Messi’s future remains up in the air as speculations continue to grow over his renewal.
The Argentine skipper’s contract ends in June, and reports suggest PSG are unsure whether they want to keep the Albiceleste legend at the club.
Meanwhile, the future of the PSG coach Christophe Galtier remains in doubt as well as the club’s sporting director Luis Campos who has been linked with Chelsea.
PSG president Nassr Al-Kheliafi is also being linked with allegations of kidnapping, and the club is still yet to deliver a statement on Achraf Hakimi who has since been charged for rape.
However, the Parisians look well underway to win their 11th Ligue 1 title as they are currently leading the Ligue 1 summit, 7 points off arch-rivals Marseille who sit in second place.
