Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag has criticised Red Devils' legends for condemning his current side
Erik ten Hag, the manager of Manchester United, faced criticism from fans and TV pundits alike after his substitutions during a disappointing 1-1 draw at home to Burnley were loudly booed. The decision to replace popular teenager Kobbie Mainoo with Rasmus Hojlund midway through the second half sparked open dissent at Old Trafford.
Defence of Squad
Ten Hag defended his squad, describing them as "one of the most dynamic and entertaining teams in the league" despite their struggles for form this season. Despite Antony firing the Red Devils ahead after 80 minutes, Burnley managed to level with a late penalty from Zeki Admouni, causing frustration among the United faithful.
"I am the manager and have to decide what the team needs," said Ten Hag. He explained that substituting young players like Mainoo was the right decision to protect them from fatigue, especially considering their injuries earlier in the season. Ten Hag called for patience from fans, emphasising the need for young players to adjust to the intensity of the Premier League.
Dig at Former United Pundits
Ten Hag also took a dig at former United TV pundits such as Rio Ferdinand, Roy Keane, Gary Neville, and Paul Scholes, who have criticised the current team for falling short of the standards set by Sir Alex Ferguson.
He reminded them of the challenges Ferguson faced in building a new team around players like Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo, emphasising that it takes time for teams to develop.
Ten Hag defends playing style
Speaking to BBC Sport, Ten Hag defended the squad's style of football, highlighting their dynamism and entertainment value. He acknowledged that there are areas for improvement, particularly in maintaining control of the game, but stressed the positive aspects of their play.
As Manchester United navigates through a challenging season, Ten Hag's defence of his squad and criticism of former United pundits highlight the complexities of managing a top club. With patience and adjustments, Ten Hag aims to lead his team to success despite the obstacles they face.
