Government is confident that construction work on Talanta City Stadium will be completed in time to stage the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations matches.

Government remains committed to ensuring that the Talanta Sports City Stadium’s completion is on schedule.

President William Ruto paid a visit to the facility on Thursday to check on the progress of construction work and he was impressed by what he saw, exuding confidence that the 60,000-seater football-only facility will be ready by December 2025.

The stadium, whose groundbreaking happened in February, is progressing well and there is optimism that it will host one of the big matches of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which Kenya will co-host with neighbours Uganda and Tanzania.

“The construction of the Talanta Sports Stadium in Nairobi is progressing well and will be completed and ready in time to host AFCON matches in 2027. Visited the site this evening and was impressed with the work done so far,” the President said through a social media post on Thursday.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen also lauded the construction work, expressing confidence in the contractor keeping to the timelines.

“Construction is on track, with completion set for December 2025, ensuring readiness as Kenya’s main venue for AFCON 2027,” Murkomen posted on X.

“This state-of-the-art, 60,000-seater stadium—the first major facility built since Kasarani and Nyayo nearly 40 years ago—will elevate Kenya’s position among elite sporting nations.

“Dedicated exclusively to football, Talanta Sports Stadium stands as a landmark project under President Ruto's administration, underscoring our commitment to developing world-class sports infrastructure for talent nurturing.”

In addition to the Talanta Sports Stadium, Kenya is also upgrading Kasarani and Nyayo Stadiums. Kasarani is also expected to host AFCON 2027 matches while Nyayo will act as one of the training venues for the tournament but host some fixtures for the Africa Nations Championships (CHAN) that will be played next year.
