Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta made one change to the side that started the 1-0 Champions League defeat at Porto in midweek, with Jorginho coming in for Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Jesus making the bench after returning from injury.
Newcastle made three changes to the side that began the 2-2 Premier League draw against Bournemouth last weekend.
Loris Karius replaced the absent Martin Dubravka in goal as he starts his first game since last term’s Carabao Cup final defeat to Manchester United.
The Gunners dominantly started the game and Newcastle were unable to withstand their press.
Arsenal’s press paid off in the 18th minute after working the ball to get a corner. The corner from the right was played by Saka and met by Gabriel's head and Loris Karius reacted quickly to block.
But his defenders get into a right old tangle as they try to clear, ending with Sven Botman bundling the ball over the line.
The second goal for the Gunners came in shortly after the first goal when Newcastle hoofed clear but the ball came back at them like a boomerang.
Jorginho picked out the diagonal run of Gabriel Martinelli, who beats the Newcastle line and squares to Kai Havertz to tap in.

Arteta’s men continued from where they stopped in the first half and were ruthless with their pressing.
Arsenal got the third goal when a pass was played out to Bukayo Saka and he twisted and turned Tino Livramento leaving him clueless before slotting it into the back of the net.

A few minutes later Arsenal added the fourth goal to kill every hope of a comeback for Newcastle. Declan Rice's left-wing corner was swung in and the ball was met by Jakub Kiwior and was deflected in by Nicolas Jover.
Newcastle got a consolation for their troubles when Joe Willock's header gave the travelling Newcastle faithful something to cheer.
The win sees the Gunners score four or more goals in their last three games in the Premier League.
