Super Falcons led by Randy Waldrum only reached the round of 16 at the ninth FIFAWWC but are surprised by a first-of-its-kind gesture from Nigeria.
Super Falcons players are in a happy mood after the government rewarded them for reaching the knockout stage at the FIFAWWC.
Nigeria made it to the round of 16 against all odds after the Falcons were drawn in a group of death alongside co-hosts Australia and Olympic champions Canada.
The Super Falcons made it out of the group unscathed before bowing out on penalties against European champions England.
Super Falcons stars demand pay
Moments after the team crashed out of the global showpiece, there were calls from all quarters to pay the ladies.
As reported by Pulse Sports, a letter from FIFPRO to intervene in issues bordering on Falcons’ wages.
The FIFPRO post saw some of Nigeria’s biggest names in football react led by Victor Osimhen and Asisat Oshoala.
Falcons grateful for largesse
Despite the uproar, the players have received a reward for making Nigeria proud from the government.
According to a BBC report, the players have been rewarded with 10, 000 dollars, N9.3 million, each via the wife of the President, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.
“We are grateful for this unexpected gesture because for several years we've been winning the Women's Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) and I can't remember us being honoured or rewarded this way," Osinachi Ohale said on behalf of the Super Falcons.
"We appreciate the federal government for their support and encouragement. And we also thank Nigerians for the remarkable support during the tournament.
"Nigeria is a country where the public appreciate good things. When you do something good, they will show appreciation, and when you don't do well, they will still show it - they will forget the good things you've been doing, so that's how it is," she laughed.
"I'm just happy we were able to put a smile on their faces."
