Nigerian forward Victor Boniface was in good form as Bayer Leverkusen continued from where they stopped last season against VfB Stuttgart.

Nigeria and Super Eagles forward Victor Boniface showed why he is Bayer Leverkusen’s main man in attack after another decisive contribution against VfB Stuttgart in the German Super Cup.

Boniface and his Invincibles completed German football without defeat after seeing off the spirited Stuttgart 4-3 via a penalty shootout after the match ended 2-2 in regular time on Saturday night.

The 23-year-old netted the opener, with the easiest goal he will score this season following a brilliant knockdown from fellow African Edmond Tapsoba in the 11th minute.

Tapsoba’s header looked destined to go in before the Nigerian bounced to steal it and seems quite happy with himself after taking to social media to react after the game.

“I don collect Wetinx belong to Caesar,” Boniface posted alongside a picture of himself sitting with Tapsoba with the Super Cup trophy.

But the lead only lasted four minutes before Stuttgart struck back to draw level and things got more dramatic and difficult for the hosts, Leverkusen, when they were reduced to 10 men after Martin Terrier was sent off on his debut.

With the Bundesliga champions down by a man, Boniface, who made a return to the Leverkusen starting eleven, became the sacrificial lamb as Xabi Alonso was forced to make a tactical adjustment that saw the Nigerian subbed off in the 41st minute.

However, it was Stuttgart who took advantage of the numerical superiority after the break when second-half substitute Under Undav made an immediate impact after coming on to put the visitors.

Leverkusen will have the last laugh, however, as Alonso’s men proved again to be that cat with nine lives as another substitute, this time Patrik Schick, came on to steal the show with a late equaliser for the German and DFB-Pokal champions to force the game into a penalty.

Werkself would keep their composure during the shootout for a 4-3 win that saw them not only lift the Super Cup but also complete German football without losing a single match, a run of 44 matches that stretches back to May 2023.

Boniface was not done with his post-match reactions as he took to Instagram to share a more hilarious victory post.

“Life is like an onion, you eat a bread but a trouser can never be a chair,” he added.
