Nigeria's Super Eagles were well represented in the CAF Player of the Year shortlist
Nigeria has two representatives in the final nominees' list for the 2024 CAF African Player of the Year award as Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong and Atalanta star Ademola Lookman took a step closer to winning the coveted title.
After Victor Osimhen became the first Nigerian player to win the award in a quarter of a century last year, the Super Eagles could make it two years in a row with both players among the favourites for the crown.
Lookman favourite for CAF Player of the Year award
Super Eagles star Lookman is viewed as the overwhelming favourite for the African Player of the Year award after starring for Atalanta and Nigeria during the past year.
Lookman scored a historic hat-trick for Atalanta in the final of the Europa League to give La Dea their first-ever European trophy after already starring for the Super Eagles in Ivory Coast as they reached the final of the Africa Cup of Nations.
The Nigerian winger’s impressive showing for Nigeria and Atalanta earned him a Ballon d’Or nomination, again emulating Osimhen’s achievements last year, making him the leading candidate for the CAF award.
AFCON MVP Troost-Ekong nominated alongside Lookman
In addition to Lookman, Nigeria has a second representative in the nominees’ list, with captain Ekong also earning a shout to become the African Player of the Year.
Troost-Ekong was named the most valuable player for the 2023 AFCON after leading Nigeria to a second-place finish with two goals, earning him a place in the last eight.
Other nominees for the award include AFCON final hero Simon Adingra, South Africa’s Ronwen Williams, Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi, and Borussia Dortmund striker Serhou Guirassy.
