The Super Eagles defender seems to be engineering a move to Chelsea after netting his first goal for Boavista.

Super Eagles defender, Bruno Onyemaechi, has sparked controversy and speculation about a potential move to Chelsea and the irk of fans following his first goal of the season for Boavista in Portugal's Primeira Liga.

The 25-year-old Nigerian international opened the scoring in spectacular fashion during an action-packed 2-2 draw against Estrela da Amadora on Monday night.

This performance came on the heels of his impressive outings for the Super Eagles during the recent international break, where he helped Nigeria secure back-to-back clean sheets in matches against Benin Republic and Rwanda under the interim national team coach.

However, it was Onyemaechi's post-match social media activity that truly caught attention.

The defender took to his platform with a bold message seemingly directed at Chelsea owner Todd Boehly, stating:

"Scored my first goal of the season today, make una help me tag Todd Boehly abeg I wan see something" [sic].

Onyemaechi's standout performance extended beyond his goal, as he led the match in tackles made, created a chance, delivered a key pass, and contributed four recoveries and three clearances.

The player's apparent attempt to engineer a move to the Premier League giants has drawn mixed reactions from fans.

While some understood his ambition, others criticised the approach as unprofessional.

Comments ranged from accusations of "Unprofessionalism at its peak" to more sympathetic views like "Everyone wants to play for the biggest club in London."

Critics argued that such public overtures could be detrimental to both Onyemaechi's current standing at Boavista and his professional reputation. Some fans even suggested that the club should fine the player for his conduct.

This incident comes at a time when Onyemaechi's stock is rising following his recent international performances, especially after failing to make an appearance during the AFCON 2023 tournament.

While the transfer window is closed, all eyes will be on the defender to see if his bold social media strategy translates into concrete interest from Chelsea or other top clubs.

However, the situation raises questions about the modern footballer's use of social media in career advancement and the fine line between ambition and professionalism in the age of instant communication.
