The Super Eagles could have gained an advantage in their search for a new manager after France were eliminated from the Olympics
Nigeria’s search for a new manager for the Super Eagles has taken a step further after one of the country’s targets to replace former manager Finidi George recently became available.
Nigeria eye Renard after Finidi exit
Nigeria have reportedly eyed a move for former Zambia and Ivory Coast manager, Herve Renard.and the French manager just became available again as France women were knocked out of the Olympic Games quarterfinal by Brazil.
Renard announced that he would step down from his role after the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, where France were considered favourites and the team’s exit at the hands of Brazil means the former Saudi Arabia manager will be free to leave his current post.
Reports suggested that Nigeria has already sent an offer to Renard, and were hoping that they could convince the former AFCON winner to sign on with the Super Eagles.
In an interview with Le Figaro, Renard confirmed his decision to return to men’s football at the end of his contract, making him a prime candidate for the Super Eagles managerial position.
Brazil knock France out of Olympics
Brazil beat hosts France 1-0 in Nantes to reach the women's Olympic soccer semifinals, extending the top-level international career of legendary forward Marta.
Despite being suspended for the quarterfinal due to a red card in Brazil's loss to Spain in the final group-stage game, Marta's presence was felt as she watched from the stands.
Gabi Portilho scored the decisive goal in the 82nd minute, bursting through two defenders to finish past French keeper Constance Picaud. This victory ensures Brazil a place in the semifinals and guarantees them a chance to play for a medal. Brazil, with Marta back from suspension, will face a rematch with Spain in the last four on Tuesday.
France, on the other hand, paid the price for failing to capitalise on its chances in the first half. Sakina Karchaoui saw her 16th-minute penalty saved by Brazil goalkeeper Lorena. Despite dominating possession and creating numerous opportunities, France could not find the back of the net, leading to their exit from the tournament.
With France's unexpected exit from the Olympics, Herve Renard’s availability could accelerate Nigeria’s plans to secure his services, although there have already been reports of former Mali coach Eric Chelle being granted the position of Super Eagles’ head huncho.
