Super Eagles hopeful Chuba Akpom's impressive 2022/23 campaign with Middlesbrough has been rewarded with the EFL Championship Player of the Year award
Super Eagles hopeful Chuba Akpom has had his excellent year with Middlesbrough crowned by being named the EFL Championship Player of the Year for the 2022/23 season.
Akpom rewarded with Player of the Year accolade
The Middlesbrough striker has scored 28 goals in 36 Championship and is the division’s top scorer helping his club to at least a place in the end-of-season promotion playoffs to reach the Premier League next season.
Akpom has outscored the next-highest goalscorer on the charts, Coventry’s Viktor Gyökeres, by eight goals and is a shoo-in for the Championship’s golden Boot as well, with only three games left to play.
His incredible effort was, on Sunday night, rewarded with the EFL Championship Player of the Year award, and a place in the PFA Championship Team of the Year, as he carted away more individual awards in a season that had already seen him win the December EFL Championship Player of the Month award.
Akpom still hoping for Super Eagles opportunity
The striker who declared that he had switched international allegiances from England to Nigeria as far back as 2019 has been unable to earn an international cap since then, as the country enjoyed an offensive boom in recent years.
Despite the disappointment of not being able to represent his country of choice so far, Akpom would be hoping that his recent purple patch and Player of the Year award will be enough to earn him an appearance in what is currently a very competitive Super Eagles frontline that includes strikers like Victor Osimhen and Terem Moffi who are dominating major European leagues at the moment.
