Nigerian legend Samuel Okwaraji died on the pitch during an encounter for the Super Eagles against Angola.
The Nigerian national football team, Super Eagles, paid tribute to the late Samuel Okwaraji following their Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON 2023, quarterfinal victory over Angola.
Pulse Sports Nigeria reports that Nigeria defeated familiar foes Angola to become the first nation to book a place in the semifinal on Friday night.
Super Eagles and Okwaraji
The Nigerian team took to social media to share a post after Ademola Lookman inspired the Eagles to a hard-fought victory against the Palancas Negras.
In a tweet on X.com, the Super Eagles celebrated their victory while remembering Okwaraji, who died after collapsing during a game against the same team in 1989.
According to the post, Okwaraji's tragic passing was a reminder of the "adamant spirit of Nigerian football" as they marked the 35th anniversary of his death.
“Today's (yesterday) victory over Angola is a poignant reminder of the adamant spirit of Nigerian football.” the post on X stated.
“As we celebrate this triumph, we also honour the memory of the late Samuel Sochukwuma Okwaraji, who tragically left us while playing against Angola 35 years ago. His passion for the game and sacrifice will never be forgotten. Rest in peace, Samuel Okwaraji, your legacy lives on. #WeRememberOkwaraji #RIP"
Defeating Angola again allowed Nigeria to honour Okwaraji's memory and passion for representing his country.
