Former Bayern Munich and Bordeaux star Gernot Rohr was a former coach of the Nigeria National football team, Super Eagles for five years.
Former Super Eagles manager Gernot Rohr has reflected on an encounter with Nigerian Sports Minister Sunday Dare during his time in Nigeria.
Rohr spent five years as the coach of Nigeria and led the Super Eagles to a third place finish at the 2019 AFCON.
The former Bundesliga star looked back on his time with the African giant during an interview with his former club Bayern Munich.
Rohr shades Dare
On the occasion of his 70th birthday, Rohr spoke to Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich.
Speaking during the interview, Rohr, who is the current coach of Benin Republic, remembered a bizarre encounter with Nigerian Sports Minister Sunday Dare in the Super Eagles camp.
“Two years ago in Nigeria, suddenly the minister of sport turned up at training with 40-50 journalists and wanted to join in the football,” Rohr told Bayern Munich website after he was asked about his experiences as a coach in Africa.
“I was perplexed. My assistant said we had to let him join in, otherwise we'd all be gone tomorrow. Without further ado, we added a circle game for him and everything was fine.”
Minister trains with Super Eagles
The incident happened during the team’s preparation for a crucial AFCON 2021 qualifiers against Sierra Leone.
Minister of Sports, Dare, in the company of then NFF President, Amaju Pinnick, joined the Super Eagles in training at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin.
It as a strange sight that trended for days back in November 12, 2020.
Rohr was subsequently sacked before the AFCON 2021 in Cameroon, with former Super Eagles star Augustine Eguavoen taking the team to Cameroon for the tourney.
