Segun Odegbami, the celebrated winner of the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations, has urged the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to prioritize appointing a Nigerian head coach for the Super Eagles.

Amunike in pole position for Nigeria job
Peseiro’s contract as Nigeria’s coach ended after leading the three-time African champions to a second-place finish at the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast.
Following Peseiro’s exit, the NFF announced it is looking for a new coach for the men’s national football team of Nigeria.
The body posted a vacancy advert for the role on its website and social media platforms, urging potential candidates to apply.
While it is not known the number of applications the NFF has received, Pulse Sports can confirm that the role is between Amunike and Conceição.
Amunike is the favourite for the role, with many people pushing the NFF to for a local coach as Peserio’s replacement.
Amunike, a former Barcelona star, has openly expressed his desire to manage the Super Eagles.
The 53-year-old, who also represented Nigeria at international level, started his managerial career with the Golden Eaglets, leading the Nigeria U-17 team to world success at the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup.
Following his spell with the Golden Eaglets, Amunike managed Khartoum Club before leading the Tanzanian national team to their first AFCON in 2019.
He also had a spell with Egyptian club Misr Lei Makkasa before serving as an assistant under Austin Eguavoen as Nigeria’s manager in February 2022.

However, despite Amunike’s qualities, he faces competition from Conceição for the Super Eagles managerial role.
Like Amunike, Conceição was also interested in Nigeria’s job in the past but lost to his fellow Portuguese, Jose Peseiro.
However, the 62-year-old tactician has now submitted his application for the role. Conceição has a wealth of managerial experience, managing in his native Portugal, Cyprus, Saudi Arabia and Romania.
His recent job was with the Cameroon national team, leading the team to a third-place finish at the 2021 AFCON.
