Yamal and Lookman: First-time Ballon d'Or nominees
Lookman, 27, a decade older than the Barcelona youngster, was a first-time nominee in this year's edition of the award, just like Yamal.
The Nigerian ace finished 14th, rewarded for his impressive AFCON outing and his sensational hat-trick to help Atalanta to a historic Europa League title. Yamal, a testament to the unprecedented levels he is showing, finished inside the top 10 (8th) after leading Spain to their fourth European Championship title.
What Lookman said
Yamal's quality is undeniable, and he continues to earn plaudits from all and sundry. Most recently, from Nigeria's Lookman, who was a dashing presence at the award gala.
Accompanying his 8th place finish, Yamal also won the Kopa trophy for the best young player in the world, and Rodri, who won the grand prize on the night, congratulated him and assured the La Masia graduate he would win the gong in the future.
Lookman seemingly agrees, as when asked who he thought could win the award and after a deep thought, he named Barcelona's Lamine Yamal.
