Chelsea will be happy to see the back of the 2022/23 season as it proved to be one of their worst in several decades
With the 2022/23 Premier League season ending, clubs can now look retrospectively at how they performed over the campaign — Chelsea with gloom, and Newcastle with pride.
This is because the Blues proved over the campaign to be the most retrogressive side in the Premier League based on year-on-year performance, while Newcastle excelled as the most progressive.
Chelsea’s abysmal decline in the 2022/23 season
Chelsea had the campaign to forget after a disgraceful season that saw them go through four managers, over €600 million worth of talent, and still finish in 12th position, behind Brentford, Fulham, and Crystal Palace, while also missing out entirely on European football next season.
Having finished in the top four in the 2021/22 season, Chelsea’s 2022/23 campaign could be seen as nothing less than shambolic.
To further buttress the drop in quality from the Blues, they achieved the largest negative difference between back-to-back seasons of any Premier League, as they finished with 30 fewer points in the 2022/23 campaign than they did in the 2021/22 season.

With only 44 points, Chelsea finished with their worst points total in a Premier League season, while finishing lower than they ever have in a 38-team season.
Newcastle's impressive rise in the 2022/23 season
On the flip side of the coin, Newcastle enjoyed an incredible campaign in 2022/23, qualifying for the UEFA Champions League for the first time in 20 years thanks to a fourth-place finish in the League.
After finishing 11th in the 2021/22 Premier League season, Newcastle’s fans could not have dreamt of a top-four finish so soon, despite the backing of its new Saudi owners, yet they have managed to achieve just that, ahead of teams like Chelsea, Tottenham, and Liverpool.
The 22-point gap between Newcastle’s final points tally for the 2022/23 and 2021/22 also represented the largest positive difference between year-on-year points in the Premier season, underscoring the Magpies' incredible improvement and achievement.
They will be looking to improve even further next season, with powerhouses like Chelsea and Liverpool expected to come back stronger and challenge them for their top-four spot.
