Defending champions Vipers SC needed to make a deeper dig to get past a resilient Rugarama FC team and secure a spot in the Round of 16 of the Stanbic Uganda Cup.

The Venoms beat Rugarama via a 5-4 penalty shootout victory, after it had ended one-all at full-time.

Hugely promising youngster Abubakali Walusimbi scored Vipers' only goal to make it his first in three appearances with the senior team this campaign.

On the evening, Vipers recent struggles were evident as they failed to maneuver througha smartly set Rugarama defensivw block.

They struggled to create clear-cut goalscoring opportunities with the hosts standing strong and tall, whilst managing chances of their own.

However, even on a not-so adventurous evening, Vipers still managed to squeeze through to the Round of 16 of the 50th edition of the Uganda Cup.

It should be noted that Vipers had also initially struggled in the preceding round as they narrowly beat Lugazi Stars FC 2-1.
