The construction of the facility has stalled for six years but will benefit the community once it's ready following a promise by Sports CS Kipchumba Murkomen to have it ready in October.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen is pleased with the progress of construction works at the Karatu National Stadium in Gatundu South, Kiambu county.

The former Transport CS said the government is committed to completing all stalled sports infrastructure across the country.

"We are committed to empowering budding talents and future generations of sportswomen and sportsmen by providing them with the necessary facilities to nurture their potential," he said on X (Twitter).

"I am pleased with the progress of the construction of Karatu National Stadium in Gatundu South, which has stalled for six years. The stadium will have a running track, a football/rugby pitch, facilities for field events, as well as courts for volleyball, netball, and other sports."

With several sporting infrastructure yet to be completed, Murkomen maintained that Karatu Stadium will be ready by the end of October and it will be accessible to the community

"We expect the contractor to complete the project by the end of October, after which it will be handed over to the County Government. We are working on the necessary protocols to ensure the stadium is accessible to the community. The facility, once completed, will be a valuable asset for the youth, neighbouring schools, and the entire community," he said.

Murkomen was accompanied by area MP Gabriel Kagombe during the inspection of the facility among other leaders.

The CS, at the same time, revealed that partnering with the private sector to commercialise sports will generate more job opportunities for young people.

Meanwhile, Murkomen said Kenya is honoured to host the 2024 Africa Road Cycling Championships.

"As a country renowned for producing world-class athletes, particularly in endurance sports, it is fitting that Kenya was chosen to host the 2024 African Road Cycling Championships. Our nation has a deep passion for sports, and this event allows us to showcase our ability to organise major international competitions."
