Sporting Lisbon provided a major update on Manchester United's bid to replace Erik Ten Hag.

Portuguese giants Sporting Lisbon have put out a statement confirming that the Red Devils have made a move to pay Ruben Amorim’s release clause as he has been identified as the ideal replacement for Erik ten Hag.

What happened

Following a run of underwhelming results, off the back of the worst league season in Manchester United's Premier League history, INEOS announced the sack of Erik ten Hag.

They announced that his assistant, Ruud Van Nistelrooy, will take over on an interim basis, but they have been working behind the scenes to expedite the process of hiring a new, permanent manager.

While there have been rumours of negotiations with ex-Barcelona coach Xavi, Amorim is the target the club are pushing forward most intently with, and according to Sporting, they are prepared to trigger his release clause.

Sporting’s statement

The 39-year-old former midfielder has a contract with Sporting until 2026; hence, Manchester United have to pay a release clause of €10 million.

“Manchester United have registered an interest in hiring Rúben Amorim and paying his €10 million release clause,” an excerpt from their statement on the Lisbon stock exchange said.

Manchester will look to get the deal over the line quickly, as they aim to get him in the dugout for the Premier League clash against Chelsea on Sunday.
