Paul Onuachu and Joe Aribo could not help save Nathan Jones’ job
Southampton have announced that they have parted ways with manager Nathan Jones after a string of poor results with the club.
Southampton part with Jones after poor results
Jones had been in charge of the club since November 10th after taking over from Ralph Hassenhutl, but has not been able to improve the club’s fortunes in the Premier League, leading to his dismissal.
Jones joined the Saints from Luton in November after winning the EFL Championship manager of the season award in the 2021/22 season and it was hoped that he would take the next steps in his managerial career by steering Southampton to safety as he had done with Luton, but things did not pan out that way.
He lost seven of the eight Premier League games he took charge of with the Saints, and left with the club rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table.
EFL Cup run and successor
It was not all doom and gloom for Southampton under Jones, however, as the club reached the semifinals of the EFL Cup and also reached the fifth round of the FA Cup.
Although Southampton eventually lost the semifinal of the EFL Cup to Newcastle, the cup run will likely be remembered as the only positive in Jones’ reign as manager.
There has been no word on who will take charge of Southampton in the long run, but First Team Lead Coach Rubén Selles will take charge of the team ahead of the Saints’ next game against Chelsea according to the club’s statement.
In addition to Jones, first-team coaches Chris Cohen and Alan Sheehan have also been relieved of their duties.
