FOOTBALL Simba, Yanga to learn their continental opponents on Wednesday

Festus Chuma 17:30 - 04.04.2023

Exciting fixtures are expected when the quarter-final draw is conducted tomorrow.

Simba and Yanga will learn their fate on Wednesday with the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup quarterfinal draw set to take place in Cairo, Egypt, at 9:30 pm.

The two Tanzanian teams are hoping to go to the competition but will have to see who they face in the quarterfinals first.

Simba secured their place in the last eight after finishing second in their pool, and they will face either defending champions Wydad Athletic Club, 2016 winners Mamelodi Sundowns or Esperance Tunis.

None of those three teams are appetizing prospects, though Simba may feel that a match-up against Esperance will give them the best chance of making it to the semis.

Simba has yet to gain any recent experience facing Esperance but has faced severe challenges in defeating the North African teams in the past editions of the tournament.

As they await the draw for the quarterfinals, Simba coach  Roberto Oliveira Gonçalves do Carmo, alias Robertinho, said: “We are ready to meet any opponents in this stage of the competition.”

Yanga breezed through to the last eight in the Confederation Cup after finishing top of Group D.

The pool had DR Congo giants TP Mazembe, Mali’s Real Bamako, and Union Sportive Monastirienne, who finished second following their last round of group match on Sunday.

The four group winners are seeded and drawn against the teams that finish second in the other three groups, as teams from the same group cannot be drawn against each other.

Yanga will face either USM Alger of Algeria, Rivers United from Nigeria, or Egyptian side Pyramids as pool winners.

The other six clubs that qualified for the last eight are Union Sportive Monastirienne (Tunisia), Marumo Gallants (South Africa), ASEC Mimosas (Ivory Coast), and AS FAR (Morocco).
