Cristiano Ronaldo played a key role as Portugal booked a place in the next round of the EURO 2024 against Turkiye.

Cristiano Ronaldo's selfless heroics have earned him the adulation of his Portugal manager Roberto Martinez following the national team's comfortable 3-0 victory over Turkiye.

The Portuguese megastar, who is seeking his second European Championship title, may have been off the scoresheet, but his creative contribution did not go unnoticed.

Ronaldo's unselfish play in setting up teammate Bruno Fernandes for the third goal was hailed as a 'spectacular' moment by the delighted Martinez.

"We saw something extraordinary, for me. In front of the goalkeeper, he gave it to Bruno Fernandes,” Martinez told UEFA of Ronaldo with admiration.

“It's an example that should be shown in every academy in Portugal and in the world of football, because it showed that the team is the most important thing,” he added

The assist was Ronaldo's eighth in the competition, making him the player with the most assists in European Championship history.

It was also the 39-year-old's sixth appearance at the Euros, cementing his status as the all-time record holder.

Portugal's comprehensive victory over Turkiye saw them move top of Group F and secure their place in the quarter-finals, putting them in pole position to continue their push for another title since 2016.

Bernardo Silva had opened the scoring in the first half before a bizarre own goal doubled Portugal's advantage at the break.

Ronaldo then played the starring role in the third goal, selflessly squaring for Fernandes to tap home with the goalkeeper at his mercy.

While the legendary striker may have been denied a goal of his own, his manager was full of praise for Ronaldo's team-first mentality and insisted his actions should be celebrated as an example for young players to follow.

With Portugal firmly on course for another deep run in the tournament, Ronaldo will be hoping to add another European crown to his extensive list of accolades before the curtain falls on his illustrious career.
