Former Tusker midfielder Shaphan Siwa has given his account of why Kenyan football lags behind Tanzania following his move from the FKF-PL side to Kagera Sugar.

Kenyan midfielder Shaphan Siwa is enjoying life in Tanzania where he now plays for Kagera Sugar.

Siwa traded a title fight with Tusker for a relegation battle with Kagera Sugar in the midseason transfer window, opting to take up a big-money offer in Tanzania, over extending his contract with the Brewers.

Life in Tanzania, however, started on a sour note as he had to wait for nearly one month before making his debut as his paperwork took long to process.

Now free to play, Siwa is already making an impact as he scored an equaliser in Kagera Sugar’s 2-1 league victory against Pamba Jiji, which leaves them still hovering around the relegation zone, as they are in 14th place in the 16-team league on 19 points, just one better than Tanzania Prisons.

However, Siwa has already experienced a big difference between Tanzania and Kenyan football, explaining why he feels his country lags behind their neighbours.

“It is very different here. First, the league is very competitive because every team has quality players. When teams have good cash flow, it means they can sign quality and competitive players and that is the case here in Tanzania,” Siwa told Telecomasia.net.

“There is also so much passion for football here in Tanzania. Teams are hugely supported at home and the people really love football. Stadiums are always full and that brings a totally different atmosphere to the game.

“In terms of style of play, teams in Tanzania mostly play possession-based football and hence the pace is a bit slower. In Kenya, it is a bit more direct so the pace is very high and also physical. But I am enjoying a different kind of experience here.”

With his club in dire straits, Siwa wants to ensure he scores as often to save them from relegation and is thankful that the goals are coming after leaving Tusker as the player with the most assists, having managed 12 in the first half of the FKF Premier League this season.

“The short-term ambition is definitely to see the team avoid relegation. We have seven matches remaining and for us each one is a final. We want to make sure we get off the drop zones and move higher on the standings,” he added.

“In the long term of course, I would like to see us competing with the top teams and being a big side here in Tanzania in terms of performance on the pitch.”

Siwa’s Kagera Sugar have two winnable games coming up, starting with Thursday’s clash against Coastal Union, before they face Tanzania Prisons on Sunday.
