Shabana wonderkid Ezekiah Omuri hoping to make the final 21-man squad for the upcoming AFCON U-20 tournament.

Shabana winger Ezekiah Omuri has explained what representing Kenya at the upcoming U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will mean to him with Salim Babu yet to name his final 21-man squad for the tournament.

Omuri, who was part of the squad that helped the side qualify for the tournament during the CECAFA qualifiers last October, is facing stiff competition to make the squad, with several other high-calibre wingers such as Hassan Beja, William Gitamu, Zech Obiero, Tyrone Kariuki and Emmanuel Osoro part of the provisional squad.

Speaking following the side’s 1-1 draw with Kariobangi Sharks on Thursday, Omuri explained how high spirits in camp were, with all the boys eager to make an impression.

“Training has been good. We are preparing well and everyone is in good spirits. There is competition for every position, so the team is in good shape to go and compete,” Omuri said.

Aware of the competition he faces to make the squad, Omuri cannot afford to rest on his laurels.

“There are a lot of wingers in the camp and everyone is working hard. All of them are okay so it is upon the coaches to decide who will make the final cut.”Omuri hopes exposure at the tournament will give him a chance to launch his professional career.

“It will be a great opportunity to go compete for the AFCON. There is also an AFCON ahead and it is a good opportunity where if you impress well, you can get chances to launch your professional career.”

Drawn in Group C, Kenya will face a stern test against defending champions Senegal, Zambia, and Sierra Leone.

Rising Stars will start off the tournament against Sierra Leone on May 1, 2025, followed by Zambia on May 4th while rounding off the group stage with Senegal on May 7th.
