Shabana were denied a last-minute equaliser during their FKF Cup tie against Kakamega Homeboyz in Mumias on Sunday, which left head coach Peter Okidi incandescent with rage.

Shabana head coach Peter Okidi has ripped into the standard of officiating during his side’s controversial 1-0 loss to Kakamega Homeboyz in the FKF Cup Round of 16 on Sunday afternoon.

The Glamour Boys thought they had leveled matters in the dying minutes of the game but center referee Isaac Hamisi awarded a foul in the build up to their equaliser by Dennis Okoth.

Austin Odongo was adjudged to have fouled Brian Eshianda, cutting Okoth's celebrations short after unleashing a low-drilled left footed shot into the back of the net.

The disallowed goal did not sit well with Shabana fans, who launched missiles onto the pitch in utter frustration, forcing Hamisi to halt play on security grounds.

After more than ten minutes of stoppage time, calm was restored allowing the players to  return to the pitch to finish the match.

It took Homeboyz goalkeeper Ibrahim Wanzala's strong arms to keep the score line in favour of Homeboyz, as he made two great saves after resumption.

In the end, Homeboyz held on to their 1-0 win, a result that left a bitter taste in the mouths of the entire Shabana fraternity, including Okidi.

“The referee has handed this game to them,” a visibly frustrated Okidi lamented after the match.

“This referee should just sign up with them if they qualify for the CAF Confederation Cup next season. I am not afraid to say this, but this is why our football is lagging behind.”

Okidi believes calls like those Hamisi made to blow for a foul he rendered “too soft” had a ripple effect on the Kenya national team Harambee Stars’ general performances during international assignments.

“Our officiating is playing a crucial role. When you give such fouls, it is no wonder our national team is lagging behind because our players are going down way too easily and are as fragile as eggs!

“The referee officiated well up until the end. When we grabbed our moment to get back into the game with a goal, he denied us clearly.”

Okidi was quick to laud his players for the efforts they showed, having dominated the game especially for large spells in the second half, but were let down by their profligacy.

“You can create a lot of chances but fail to score and others you rightly find the back of the net but then the referees wrongly deny you. This was a chance to equalise and go all the way to penalties.”

Okidi has made a rallying call to referees to “up their game” in efforts to improve the standards of officiating and competitiveness in Kenyan football.

“I am hurting and I feel for these referees. If they have ambitions to be accredited by FIFA, they need to work harder. Since I started coaching in the Premier League, this is the worst officiating I think I have ever witnessed.”

Okidi has rallied his players to put the defeat behind them and focus on attempting to clinch their first league title in history.

“We need to forget it quickly. You saw they decided to return to the game and finish it. We are focusing on the next game and our energy will all be on the league because all top six sides have that capability.”

Homeboyz, the 2023 FKF Cup winners, will now face Nairobi United in the quarterfinals as they continue their push for a return to continental football. But for Shabana and Okidi, Sunday’s result will be hard to forget.
