Senegal had replaces AFCON-winning coach Aliou Cissé following poor performances, appointing an interim coach ahead of crucial qualifiers.

Former Birmingham City and Portsmouth midfielder Aliou Cisse has been replaced as the head coach of Senegal’s national football team, the Teranga Lions, following his dismissal by the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF).

Cisse, who led the national team to their historic Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title in 2022, has come under increasing scrutiny for his recent decisions and results.

The FSF has appointed Pape Thiaw, Cisse’s former assistant and a highly regarded coach within Senegalese football, as the interim manager.

Thiaw will take charge of the team as they prepare for two crucial 2025 AFCON qualifying matches against Malawi.

Thiaw’s appointment comes just eight days before Senegal’s third qualifier, signaling a swift reshuffle by the federation.

“The FSF would like to thank Aliou Cissé for his good collaboration and his brilliant results at the head of various national selections and wishes him every success for the future,” the FSF said in a statement.

The federation’s decision to part ways with Cissé follows Senegal’s disappointing performance at the recent CAF Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d'Ivoire, where the defending champions were eliminated in the round of 16.

Thiaw, a former Senegalese international who was part of the country’s famous 2002 World Cup squad, has built an impressive coaching résumé. He served as Cisse’s assistant and led the Senegalese U-23 team to victory in the 2022 African Nations Championship.

His success at the youth level earned him promotion within the national team setup and the trust of the Senegalese FA.

Pape Thiaw has also been actively involved with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and FIFA’s Technical Group, where he regularly exchanges ideas with top coaches across the continent.

Recently, he participated in the CAF AFCON 2023 Coaches Symposium, held in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire.

His reputation as a tactician and his commitment to sharing knowledge have made him a respected figure in African football.

Thiaw will be joined on the technical staff by Hussein Bichara Farhat, a physical trainer known as “Coach Flamma,” who has worked with several professional footballers during their off-seasons in Senegal.

Frenchman Teddy Pellerin has been named as Thiaw’s assistant coach.

The coaching change comes at a critical time for Senegal, with the team needing to secure positive results in their upcoming AFCON qualifiers.

Cissées tenure, which began in 2015, saw him guide Senegal to their first AFCON title in 2022 and reach the quarterfinals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

However, his recent tactics and selections have come under fire from the Senegalese public, particularly following the team’s early exit from the 2023 AFCON.
