Steve Clarke’s men needed a win in Stuttgart to end with four points in Group A, possibly guaranteeing qualification as one of the four best third-placed sides after three rounds of matches.
However, the Tartan Army were stunned in the 10th minute of second-half stoppage time after Kevin Csoboth converted following Hungary’s fast break to clinch maximum points for Marco Rossi’s men.

Scotland’s unwanted record
Clarke’s team mustered only four shots in the 1-0 defeat, with none coming in the game’s first half.
It was the second time in their short-lived group-stage participation that they went the entire first half of a game without a shot of any kind, with Scotland having zero attempts in their opening game with tournament hosts Germany. Both fixtures ended in defeat for the Scots.
The eliminated Group A side mustered only 17 shots in their three games, the joint-fewest along with Northern Ireland (2016) of any side since the group phase was introduced in 1980.
What comes next?
Scotland ended fourth in Group A with a point from an available nine.
Hungary face a nervous wait before their Euro 2024 fate is determined, with the remainder of the final group games to come over the following days.
