Egypt’s new coach Hossam Hassan had a brush with death on Monday after he reportedly suffered food poisoned from eating sandwiches.

Egypt’s new coach Hossam Hassan suffered a major health scare on Monday evening after he was reportedly poisoned from eating sandwiches.

The legendary Egyptian player was taken ill on his way back from an Egyptian Premier League match involving Ismaili and Zamalek which ended goalless as he had gone to scout some players who would make the national team in future.

Hassan was reported to have suffered fatigue after arriving at the stadium following a meeting with his technical bench members throughout the day and it is when he decided to buy some sandwiches on his way back to Cairo from the Ismaili Stadium.

It is reported that shortly after arriving in Cairo, Hassan had some shortness of breath and that is when he was rushed to hospital for some tests which showed that he had suffered severe allergy and stomach poisoning and put on a respirator for some hours.

Hassan was discharged on Tuesday morning and advised to take a rest as he continues his recovery.

The tactician is Egypt’s all-time leading scorer and was appointed this month to replace Portuguese Rui Vitoria who was sacked after the Pharaohs exited the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d'Ivoire at the Round of 16 after losing to DR Congo.

Hassan, 57, has previously coached several Egyptian clubs among them Zamalek, Ismaili, Pyramids, Etihad Alexandria and Al-Masry Al-Bor Saidi. He also coached the Jordan national team from 2013-2014.
