Babu took over as Police head coach following a tumultuous first half of the season, but has lost none of the games he has been in charge, who now find themselves in fourth place.

Kenya Police interim coach Salim Babu has explained how he managed to turn around the club’s fortunes after a difficult first half of the season.

Police had a rocky opening 17 games that involved them having to change coaches three times due to a lot of issues on and off the pitch, but have found some priceless momentum since the turn of the new year, winning five of their six matches, and now finding themselves just 10 points behind leaders Gor Mahia.

Babu, who led Kenya U-18 to the final of the CECAFA U-18 Championships in December last year, has now explained how he managed to turn around the club’s fortunes, paying a keen emphasis on proper-man management.

“We just brought harmony into the team and psyched these boys up a little because they were not playing to their level best,” Babu said.

“It was all about bringing harmony and embracing brotherhood, and then on the pitch, if you get chances, utilise them well.

“It is that simple. When everyone is playing at their level best with people fighting for one another, it becomes easy.”

Police have been nicknamed Police-Saint Germain due to their willingness to spend big on established international footballers, with a vast majority of their squad being made up of Harambee Stars footballers who have been based abroad in recent times.

Naturally, you would expect them to be full of egos, but Babu has revealed that the current crop of players are some of the most humble individuals that he has ever coached.

“Sometimes, it is about talking to individuals. Listening to what they have to say and then telling them what needs to be done.

“Police players listen despite their reputations preceding and playing for foreign and national teams. That has been the good thing and the secret. Listening to them and what they have to say and then reaching a consensus, which makes it easy.”
