Salah moved clear of Gerrard to become Liverpool's all-time top-scorer in Europe
Mohamed Salah’s goal against Real Madrid in Liverpool’s unfortunate UEFA Champions League loss was his 42nd in the UCL and means that Salah has now become the Liverpool player with the most goals in European competition.
Salah eclipses Gerrard to claim UCL record
Salah’s goal to break the record was probably the easiest of all 42 as he profited from an error from Thibaut Courtois to score Liverpool’s second of the night, but every goal counts and he will relish the record all the same.
Salah moved past Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard whom he was previously tied with on 41 goals to become the outright owner of the record and set this mark much quicker than the previous record owner.
It took Gerrard 129 matches across 14 European seasons to set the previous mark of 41, but it has taken Salah just over five and a half seasons and 65 matches to reach 42 goals.
A breakdown of Salah's UCL goals for Liverpool
Salah joined Liverpool in 2017 and scored 11 goals in the Champions League as Real Madrid reached the final, losing to Real Madrid. He then scored five goals in 12 appearances in his second season as Liverpool won their first UCL title since Gerrard himself lifted the cup in 2005.
His highest tally so far in a single season still stands at 11, but he has scored eight goals in consecutive seasons and could get more this season if he scores in Liverpool’s round of 16 second leg at the Bernabeu.
The record will be the last thing on the Egyptian’s mind, however, as his goal on the night did not stop Liverpool from losing 5-2 to Real Madrid, all but knocking them out of the UCL.
