Roberto Mancini has been relieved of his duties as head coach of the Saudi Arabian national team following a tumultuous 14-month spell marked by poor performances and mounting tensions with fans.

The Italian manager, who was appointed last August on a lucrative four-year contract worth approximately £21 million a year, leaves after overseeing just seven wins in 18 matches.

The Saudi Arabian Football Federation announced that a “joint agreement” had been reached to terminate Mancini’s contract, ending speculation about his future after a series of disappointing results.

The federation thanked Mancini for his contributions and expressed hopes for his future endeavors.

Mancini’s tenure began with optimism, especially after his successful run as Italy’s manager, where he led the national team to victory in the 2021 European Championship.

However, his time in Saudi Arabia was characterized by struggles in World Cup qualification and a dismal Asian Cup campaign, culminating in an early exit in the last-16 against South Korea.

The national team currently sits third in Group C of Asia’s qualification process for the 2026 World Cup, with only one win from four matches.

The pressure intensified following a 0-0 draw with Bahrain earlier this month, during which Mancini was seen arguing with frustrated supporters, reflecting the growing discontent among fans.

Adding to the turmoil, Mancini had publicly criticized the impact of the Saudi Pro League's influx of foreign talent, arguing that it detracted from the opportunities available for local players.

He stated, "Three years ago, all the Saudi players played every game. Today, 50 to 60 percent don’t play in the games. This is our primary problem."

Mancini's sacking comes at a crucial time as the Saudi Football Federation prepares to announce his successor, aiming to revitalize the team’s World Cup ambitions.

The federation is expected to move quickly to secure a new manager who can steer the national team back on course.
