Rising Stars poised for crunch showdown against Burundi in U20 AFCON-CECAFA qualifiers

The U20 national team Rising Stars are eying a place in next year's U-20 AFCON with the finalists of this year's AFCON-CECAFA qualifiers representing the region at the continental showpiece.

Salim Babu’s charges, the U-20 national football team Rising Stars are eying a place at next year’s U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament when they take on Burundi U-20 in the semis on Friday, October 18 at the Azam Complex stadium.

Stars have given a good account of themselves in this year’s U-20 AFCON qualifiers for the CECAFA region that is has been ongoing in Tanzania from October 6.

The U-20 national side qualified out of the group stages with an unbeaten record in four matches played, winning three and drawing one.

Babu’s charges were drawn in group A with Tanzania U-20, Rwanda U-20, Sudan U-20 and Djibouti U-20.

Stars kicked off their campaign with a 2-1 win against the hosts Tanzania before they were held to a barren draw by Rwanda in their second match despite a plethora of chances.

The Kenyans stamped their authority in Group A with a back-to back 4-0 demolition of Djibouti and Sudan.

Nastic Sports Academy’s Aldrine Kibet led the onslaught in the Stars' most recent outing against Sudan on Tuesday where he netted a hat-trick with Kevin Wangaya adding to the tally in a 4-0 win.

The result all but ensured the youngsters place in the semi-finals where they take on Burundi for a chance to grace the final and next year’s U-20 AFCON.

Babu has lauded his charges account of themselves so far in the tournament as they shift focus to Burundi.

“I am very happy with how my players performed, scoring four goals. The overall performance was good, and I am proud of these boys for executing our plan almost perfectly. The results speak for themselves. I couldn’t ask for more,” said the tactician post-match.

“We now have to focus on preparing for the semifinal against Burundi. It won’t be an easy game because they’ve earned their place, but we’ll need to be at our best to advance. We’ll give it our all,” he assured.

Teams that have already qualified for next year's tournament includes newly crowned COSAFA champions, South Africa joined by Zambia, UNIFFAC champions, Democratic Republic of Congo joined by finalists Congo and WAFU A winners, Senegal as well as finalists Sierra Leone.
