Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy opens up on why he snubbed Gor Mahia & Tusker players
Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy has shed light on why he did not have Gor Mahia and Tusker FC players in his squad for matches against Gambia and Gabon.
“The team has jelled well, and that is making a good team because if we gel early, it means we would get better,” he stated from their training base at the MPESA Foundation Academy in Thika.
Kenya’s qualification for the tournament, their first in over 50 years, came after an impressive CECAFA U-20 campaign in Tanzania.
The Rising Stars kicked off with a 2-1 victory over the hosts, secured a goalless draw against Rwanda, and thrashed Djibouti 4-0. They dominated Sudan 4-0 in the quarterfinals, with Aldrine Kibet netting a hat-trick, and repeated the scoreline against Burundi in the semis.
Though they fell 2-1 to Tanzania in the final, their overall performance was enough to seal their historic AFCON berth.

Mohammed Bajaber's defiant message for Kenyans following historic Harambee Stars outing
Harambee Stars midfielder Mohammed was among the stand-out performers for Kenya during their 2026 World Cup Qualifiers fixtures against Gambia and Gabon.
A key advantage for Kenya is the continuity within the squad, with 11 players having previously been part of the Junior Stars setup that reached the final of the 2023 CECAFA Boys’ Championship.
Ochieng believes this long-standing familiarity will be crucial. “We have been together for a long time since 2023. If you look, most of us have been together since the U-18 level, so we understand each other,” he said.
With Kenya making a return to the continental stage, Ochieng has made it clear that they are not just there to make up the numbers.
“We are not just going there to participate. We are not going on a trip. We want to go for the title, and that is what people need to understand,” he asserted.
