Wanjala captained Kenya to a first ever AFCON U-20 place in over 40 years following their CECAFA U-20 exploits in Tanzania.
Rising Stars captain Amos Wanjala is optimistic about Kenya's chances in the upcoming U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in 2025, despite the team's recent 1-0 loss to Tanzania in the final of the qualifying tournament.
Wanjala, who has led this team through several milestones, believes the squad has the talent and resilience to make a mark on the continental stage.
Reflecting on their qualification, Wanjala expressed gratitude for the team’s progress under the guidance of their coaches, who have been crafting a detailed preparation plan. “It’s a positive thing that we have qualified,” Wanjala noted.

“Our coaches are setting up good things for us, keeping us united with solid training preparation. I believe we’re coming together well.”
The skipper, who previously led his team to victory in the Kenya Secondary School Sports Association (KSSSA) title with Solidarity Boys, draws confidence from his experience with many of his current teammates.
“Most of the players were with me in the under-18s, where we performed well. With continuity and perhaps a few additions, I think this team is really strong, and our coaches have done an amazing job in bringing us together,” he said.

'I am super grateful' - Kelvin Wangaya reflects on CECAFA U-20 AFCON qualifying breakthrough for Rising Stars
Wangaya was one of the breakthrough stars at the tournament as Rising Stars sealed qualification to the U-20 AFCON qualifiers.
Wanjala’s leadership has been instrumental in shaping the team’s identity. His performances on the pitch earned him a move to Spanish academy Nastic Sports alongside Aldrine Kibet, a fellow Solidarity Boys star. He now plays for fifth tier side Athletic Club Torrellano .
Reflecting on the challenges of wearing the captain’s armband, he described the responsibility as more than just symbolic.
“Being a captain is a privilege. It’s not just about wearing the armband but requires a serious commitment,” Wanjala explained. “I have a big heart and open mind, and this has really helped me keep the team together and focused on our goals.”
Under the guidance of coach Salim Babu, the Rising Stars have built a reputation for their dynamic style of play, earning praise for their skill and teamwork. Despite a few setbacks in recent finals, Wanjala and his teammates remain confident in their abilities to compete with some of the best teams in Africa.
“We’re ready to face any team,” Wanjala asserted. “This is a talented, motivated group, and we won’t back down from any opponent, regardless of their status in African football.”
