Rising Stars are placed in Group C of the AFCON U-20 tournament, where they will be facing Sierra Leone, Zambia and Senegal.

Rising Stars head coach Salim Babu has outlined his ambitions for the upcoming U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) as Kenya seeks to make history by qualifying for the FIFA U-20 World Cup.

The tournament, set to take place between 26 April and 18 May, will see Kenya’s young guns battle Sierra Leone, Zambia, and reigning champions Senegal in Group C.

Ahead of the tournament, the team will set up camp in Morocco to fine-tune preparations.

However, the uncertainty surrounding the host nation, following reports that Ivory Coast has withdrawn its hosting rights, leaves the Confederation of African Football (CAF) scrambling for an alternative venue.

Despite the uncertainty, Babu remains optimistic, expressing confidence in his squad’s ability to perform at the highest level.

“We have had one week of training, and the boys are ready. They are fighting for spots in the squad,” Babu said from the team’s training base on Wednesday.

As it stands, Kenya are scheduled to kick off their campaign against Sierra Leone on 1 May at the Stade de la Paix de Bouaké before facing Zambia on 4 May.

They will then conclude their group-stage matches against Senegal on 7 May—all at the same venue. Babu believes his side has a realistic chance of progressing to the knockout rounds.

“We are in a group that can allow us to proceed if we play our cards right. It is not a difficult group, but neither is it an easy one,” he remarked.

The Rising Stars boss acknowledged Kenya’s underdog status, given their lack of previous participation in the competition, but remains confident in his squad’s capabilities.

“If we can win our first two games, we will be a shoo-in for the quarter-finals, which is our target.”

Babu also expressed optimism over the arrival of key players, including Amos Wanjala, Aldrine Kibet, and Stanley Wilson, who are expected to join camp soon. He called on Kenyans to rally behind the team.

“I believe we will not let down Kenyans. We know where we want to go. I urge them to pray for us and support us, and I know we will do well.”

The 13-team tournament will see the top two teams from each group advance to the quarterfinals, alongside the two best third-placed teams. The four semi-finalists will automatically book their tickets to the FIFA U-20 World Cup Chile 2025. With history beckoning, the Rising Stars are determined to rise to the occasion and stake their claim on the continental stage.
