Manchester City legend Francis Lee, who died of cancer in October 2023, ensured his family will live comfortably before he passed away.

Manchester City legend Francis Lee left behind a fortune for his family before he died from lung cancer aged 79 in October 2023.

The former striker, affectionately known as “Franny,” left behind not just cherished memories but also a considerable fortune of £1.6 million for his family.

Lee's legacy extends beyond his impressive financial bequest. A prolific player, he joined Manchester City from Bolton Wanderers in 1967 and quickly became a fan favourite.

Over his eight years at the club, he scored 148 goals in 330 appearances, helping City secure numerous trophies, including the First Division title, FA Cup, League Cup, and the European Cup Winners' Cup.

His impact on the pitch earned him 27 caps for England, where he scored 10 goals.

Following his retirement from professional football, Lee became a successful businessman, establishing a profitable toilet paper company that significantly contributed to his wealth.

This entrepreneurial spirit and financial acumen allowed him to enjoy a comfortable life, residing in a £500,000 home in Wilmslow, Cheshire, where he spent his final years surrounded by loved ones.

In his will, Lee ensured that his family would be well taken care of. His wife, Gillian, received the majority of his possession, while his sons and other family members were left substantial sums, including £100,000 each for his brother and sister-in-law, and £250,000 for his late eldest son, Gary, who tragically passed away just months before Lee.

The remainder of Lee’s estate is reportedly set in a trust fund for Gillian and his three surviving children, ensuring their financial security.

In addition to his wealth, Lee’s family inherited a treasure trove of medals that represent his storied career—a fitting tribute to a man who dedicated his life to the sport he loved. His contributions to football and charity earned him a CBE in 2016, further solidifying his legacy.

Following his death, Manchester City released a heartfelt tribute, acknowledging Lee’s immense contributions to the club.

Flags flew at half-mast around the Etihad Stadium, and a bronze statue commemorating Lee, alongside fellow legends Colin Bell and Mike Summerbee, stands as a lasting homage to his impact on the club and its supporters.

Francis Lee’s passing is a profound loss, but his legacy both in football and as a devoted family man will endure for generations to come. His life serves as a testament to the enduring spirit of a true Manchester City icon.
