The CAF Player of the Year favourite will miss Nigeria's final AFCON qualifier against Rwanda
Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman has reportedly taken precautionary leave from Nigeria’s final Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Rwanda.
The Atalanta frontman is reportedly set to jet back to Italy to be assessed by his club, who hope that the Nigerian star has not suffered a serious injury.
Lookman ruled out of Nigeria vs Rwanda
After playing in all of Nigeria’s previous AFCON qualifiers, Lookman will reportedly not join the Super Eagles for the match against Rwanda in Uyo.
Lookman is believed to have suffered a slight niggle, but the severity of his injury has not been stated officially.
With the Super Eagles already securing a spot in Morocco 2025, the Atalanta star will not be risked in the final group game, which is essentially a dead rubber for the table-topping Nigerian side.
Instead, Lookman will reportedly return to Atalanta, where the severity of his knock will be assessed by club doctors.
Atalanta eager for healthy Lookman
The Serie A side will be grateful to have Lookman back early from international duty and will hope that any reported injuries are not too serious as the Nigerian has been vital to the team’s success this season.
Lookman has managed eight goals and five assists in 14 games for Atalanta this season and is one of the most in-form players at the club.
The Super Eagles star has been involved in more goals than any other player in Serie A this year and will be hoping for a strong finish to 2024 after returning from the international break.
Having already made a splash this year by finishing 14th in the Ballon d’Or race, Lookman will be hoping to go a step further by becoming the second Nigerian in a row to claim the coveted CAF African Player of the Year award in Deccember.
