The former Brighton coach reportedly turned down a move to replace Erik Ten Hag at Manchester United
While the final details of Roberto De Zerbi’s prospective move to Olympique de Marseille are being finalised, Foot Mercato has revealed that the Italian manager chose the job at the Vélodrome over a position at Manchester United.
De Zerbi rejects Manchester United
Despite widespread reports in the UK confirming Erik Ten Hag's continuity at United, it is well-known that the club explored potential managerial replacements. Managers like Thomas Tuchel and De Zerbi were approached, with the latter being available after his departure from Brighton and Hove Albion at the end of the 2023/24 season.
De Zerbi reportedly turned down Manchester United's approach in favour of joining Marseille. The deal to bring him to OM is nearing completion, with discussions between the relevant parties at an advanced stage and according to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, the only remaining issue to be resolved is the compensation fee, which is expected to be around €6 million.
Details of De Zerbi’s Marseille contract
To facilitate his move to the Vélodrome, De Zerbi has reportedly made financial sacrifices, essentially taking a pay cut for the move to the Ligue 1 giants.
The former Brighton manager has reportedly agreed to a three-year deal with Marseille, pending confirmation by the club after they agree to a compensation package with Brighton.
Despite the difficulty of getting a deal over the line, De Zerbi appears determined to seal a move to Marseille, and his reported rejection of Premier League giants Manchester United to get the deal done is further proof of his commitment to Les Minots.
