Lee Mason forgot to draw the lines to check for an offside in Brentford's equaliser against Arsenal
Referee Lee Mason has been axed from the weekend roster for Premier League matches after his blunder in the Arsenal vs Brentford cost the gunners a point and forced PGMOL to offer the league leaders an apology.
Lee Mason not on the roster for this weekend's matches
Mason was in the VAR room and forgot to check for offside when Ivan Toney scored Brentford’s equaliser against Arsenal. It turned out that the goal should have been ruled out causing Mason as well as PGMOL to be heavily criticised.
Mason was also involved in another VAR error in Arsenal’s game earlier in the season against Manchester United when he incorrectly advised that the Gunners’ opening goal be ruled out due to a foul on Christian Eriksen.
Due to his repeated mistakes, the 50-year-old former on-pitch referee has been removed from the weekend’s roster of referees in the Premier League.
After a weekend that brought out the worst in Premier League referees, the PGMOL were forced to apologise to two clubs, Arsenal and Brighton, and are looking to avoid a repeat this weekend.
PGMOL trying to avoid a repeat of last weekend’s disasterclass
In addition to Mason’s error in the Arsenal vs. Brighton game, PGMOL had to apologise to Brighton for errors made by John Brooks in the Seagull’s match against Crystal Palace and have also axed him from upcoming matches as well.
Brooks’ error was similar to Mason’s as he incorrectly judged an offside call on Pervis Estupinian’s goal after drawing the line to check the offside from the wrong player.
These were not the only errors by referees in the Premier last weekend, but they were the only ones that PGMOL apologised for and they have taken active steps to avoid a repeat of the disaster weekend.
