NFF picks new Super Eagles boss
The 46-year-old Malian will now be tasked with steering the Super Eagles through their upcoming international fixtures in September, as they look to bounce back from a disastrous start to their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign under former boss George.
Chelle's appointment has sparked a mixed reaction from Nigerian fans, with some supporters sceptical about handing the high-pressure job to the relatively unknown Mali coach.
'Sigh... This not a meme, this is the new super Eagles coach. Ladies and gent I present u Malian Éric Chelle,' one disgruntled fan wrote on social media.
Another fan questioned whether Chelle would be able to cope with the intense demands of the Super Eagles job, adding: 'Can he cope with the pressure of handling Super Eagles? This one wey den dey pour water for head during the Last Afcon.'
However, not everyone is against the decision, with one supporter questioning why the NFF had opted to sack the previous Portuguese coach, writing: 'I still never understand why we sack the Portuguese coach.'
Chelle, whose viral water-pouring reaction during the Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year made him an internet sensation, will now be under immense pressure to turn Nigeria's fortunes around and steer them towards qualification for the 2026 World Cup.
The Malian has big shoes to fill after the departure of Finidi George, who resigned from his position just two games into his tenure following a disastrous start to the World Cup qualifying campaign.
Chelle will be hoping to quickly win over the sceptical Nigerian fans, with the nation's passionate supporters demanding a swift return to form for the Super Eagles under their new leadership.
