Marcus Rashford believes he can score up to 40 goals in the coming season as he aims to beat Wayne Rooney to become Manchester United's top scorer of all time

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford has backed himself to break the Red Devil’s all-time goalscoring record, currently held by legend Wayne Rooney.

Rooney became a Red Devils legend after joining the Mancunian side from Everton, playing 559 games and scoring a club-record 253 goals for Manchester United.

Rashford, who currently wears the number 10 jersey formerly worn by Rooney, believes that he can break the former Manchester United captain’s goalscoring record and has set a target for himself for the upcoming season as a start.

The England international was interviewed by another former Manchester United star, Gary Neville, on the Overlap podcast when he was asked if he believed he could go on to break the all-time top-scoring record, to which he replied, “Hopefully I will. You never know what's going to happen, but I'm all about scoring goals and trying to make assists. There's a chance that it can happen.”

The Manchester United forward also noted that he had already received the backing of the current record holder, Rooney, to break the record, saying the former England captain had given him his blessings to surpass his current tally.

“'I've spoken to Wazza about it – he wants me to do it. He said it would be good for me to do it as I've grown up at the club,” Rashford said, continuing, “Hopefully I get the opportunity to try and make it happen.”

Rashford enjoyed his best goalscoring season in the 2022/23 season, netting 30 goals in 56 appearances in all competitions. This took his overall goal tally for Manchester United to 123 goals and the English forward believes he can score even more in the coming season.

He said, “Before last season, I always aimed for 20 goals – a good benchmark for a winger,' Rashford said. But this season, I've hit 30 – we have to try and push it now.

“Towards the end of the season, I was struggling with a few injuries, and I wasn't quite at it – that's when the goals started to dry up for a bit.

“If I can keep that side of it under taps, I feel like I can go on and get 35 or 40.”

Rashford and Manchester United hope to overcome their neighbours, Manchester City in the 2023/24 season, as they look to win their first league title in 2013.
