Paris Saint Germain needed a Kylian Mbappe goal in stoppage time to win 2-1 away at solid Brest
Paris Saint Germain won a fourth straight game in Ligue 1 thanks to a late match-winner by Kylian Mbappe against Brest.
Cristophe Galtier's men were looking to overcome the midweek disappointment against Bayern Munich with a win but the hosts were not planning on making it easy.
The relegation-threatened home side gave their table-topping visitors a worthy battle but the Parisiens found a way through Mbappe late on.
PSG hold Brest in the first half
PSG came into this game unbeaten in their previous 24 games against Brest and were determined to keep it that way as Carlos Soler seeing effort was tipped onto the post by a sprawling Marco Bizot in the Brest goal.
PSG's next clear-cut chance would come in the 37th minute as the ball fell to Soler again, this time the Spanish international rifled home a rebound past Bizot who could do nothing this time having initially saved Mbappe's first effort.
Brest stood firm in the face of adversity and were rewarded for their bravery just six minutes later when Franck Honorat raced through on goal and lifted a clever strike over Gianluigi Donnarumma to level the game going into half-time.
Mbappe the hero
The second half was similar to the first as Brest did their best to contain PSG and look to hurt the visitors on the break.
Lilian Brassier spurned a glorious opportunity to give Brest the lead, directing a close-range header wastefully into the side netting.
PSG also wasted chances of their own as Mbappe uncharacteristically scooped over the bar from eight yards out, and Lionel Messi forced Bizot into another great save with a low strike.
As the game continued to wind down and the home fans started celebrating what they thought was an unlikely point against PSG, the visitors reminded them why they were favourites in the first place.
Mbappe beat the offside trap having been picked out by a superb Messi pass and confidently rounded Bizot and slotted home the winner in the second minute of stoppage time.
The goal had more significance beyond just being a game-winner, it was also PSG’s 3,000th goal in Ligue 1, a landmark moment by a special player.
