Bundesliga action returns this weekend after the DFB Pokal Cup took centre stage in the midweek.
Last week’s round of action delivered some surprising results. Bayern Munich continued their winless run after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Eintracht Frankfurt.
Union Berlin, meanwhile, won the Berlin derby, beating city rivals, Hertha Berlin 2-0. Borussia Dortmund continued their perfect start to the season with a 2-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen on Sunday.
This week will see another round of exciting action, with Augsburg kicking off proceedings against Bayer Leverkusen.
Both teams come into the match on the back of a loss, with Augsburg suffering a 3-1 loss at Freiburg, while Leverkusen lost at home to Dortmund.
A win for Augsgburg will put them within three points of Leverkusen, but Xabi Alonso’s men will also be looking to move closer to the European spots.
Dortmund vs Freiburg
Dortmund’s clash against Freiburg is the game to look out for on Saturday. Both teams head into the match in contrasting fortunes.
Dortmund have won all their three league games this year, while Freiburg have picked up four points from a possible nine this year.
However, it promises to be an interesting encounter as both teams are currently leveled on 34 point in fourth and fifth place, respectively.
The Black and Yellows will head into the match as the favourites though, as they have won 11 of their last 12 home matches against Freiburg in all competitions.
Edin Terzić’s men have also won their last two matches against Breisgau Brazilians, including the reverse fixture earlier this season.
A win for either side could see them go top of the Bundesliga table although other results will need to go their way.
Wolfsburg vs Bayern Munich
On Sunday, Bayern Munich will go in search of their first league game when they travel to Volkswagen Arena to take on Wolfsburg.
Bayern have had a disappointing start to the year, even though they are unbeaten. The Bavaria giants are currently without a win in three league games they have played so far this year.
Julian Nagelsmann's men played a draw in all of their three league games, allowing their rivals to catch up on them.
Their draw with Eintracht Frankfurt reduced their lead at the top to one point after Union Berlin won their match.
By the time they kick off on Sunday, Bayern could be in second place if Union win their clash against Mainz on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Wolfsburg sit in seventh place, but they are just five points off the final Champions League spot.
The Wolves have had a good start to 2023, with two wins out of three, although they crashed out of the German Cup during the week.
However, Niko Kovac’s men have a poor record against Bayern as they are winless in their last 18 matches against the Champions.
But with Bayern’s poor start to the new year, Wolfsburg will also feel confident in their chances. Nonetheless, this promises to be an exciting encounter at Volkswagen Arena on Sunday.
