President William Ruto has insisted Kenya will stay true to the timelines given for the completion of stadiums to be used for CHAN 2025 and AFCON 2027 tournaments.
President William Ruto has reiterated Kenya’s commitment to ensuring it co-hosts the 2025 Africa Nations Championships (CHAN) and the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations by getting stadiums ready on time.
East Africa has been handed the hosting rights for the CHAN tournament, set to take place from February 1-28, 2025, adding onto the 2027 AFCON, with both tournaments set to be staged in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.
While Tanzania and Uganda have approved stadiums, Kenya still do not, with Kasarani under renovation with Nyayo Stadium soon to be closed for further work and Ruto says the country will stick to the timelines given as well as when it intends to complete construction of the new Talanta City Sports Centre.
“Kenya will be ready to co-host the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in 2027. The preparations of our three stadia - renovation of Kasarani and Nyayo and construction of the brand new Talanta Sports City Stadium - are progressing well,” Ruto said via a social media post.
“We commit that Kasarani and Nyayo will be ready by the end of this year for African Nations Championships 2025, while Talanta Sports City Stadium will be completed by December 2025 for AFCON 2027.
“Met the Confederation of Africa Football President Patrice Motsepe, State House Nairobi. Mr Mostsepe expressed satisfaction with the preparations of AFCON.”
The President met with his Confederation of African Football counterpart Patrice Motsepe on Monday the same day a CAF Executive Committee Meeting was held in Nairobi which confirmed the dates for next year’s tournament.
