The Head of State has eulogised Cardovillis as an insightful and gifted journalist following his untimely demise at his house in Nairobi on Saturday
President William Ruto is among those who have sent their tributes following the tragic death of veteran sports journalist Sean Cardovillis on Saturday.
The renowned sports commentator, who was working at Capital FM until his death, passed away at his house in Westlands, Nairobi.
Cardovillis premiered the popular Saturday Music and Sports show with his powerful commentary and infectious enthusiasm for sports making him a household name locally and internationally.
He was renowned for his love for motorsports which saw him brush shoulders with the who-is-who in the country and internationally, especially at the Safari Rally where he was the official MC since the event returned on the WRC calendar in 2021.
“Saddened by the passing of a brilliant and outstanding sports broadcaster Sean Cardovillis. He was a cool, insightful and gifted journalist who played an integral role on our radio stations,” Ruto said in his tribute through a social media post while accompanying a photo of him and the journalist during this year’s Safari Rally in Naivasha.
“We will miss his clear and concise voice, passion and upbeat personality. Our prayers are with his family and media fraternity at this painful time. Rest in Peace, Sean.”
Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai was also among those who eulogised the journalist, who was one of his constituents, lauding him for helping make the community a better place to live.
“While in college, I listened to Sean Cardovillis and Eddy Kimani on Capital FM. Nobody delivered the sports the way they did. More so, MotorSports. Oooh what a sad day,” said Alai.
“A community leader, sports guru, brother and friend. I have lost a pillar in Kileleshwa Ward. The Raphta Road community won’t be the same again. We built a strong network of community mobilisers in the affluent parts of Kileleshwa with you to get a better neighbourhood.”
Capital FM had on Saturday morning expressed shock at the untimely demise of Cardovillis, terming him a legend who leaves behind an unmatched legacy.
“We have lost a legend. Sean’s passion and dedication to bringing the world of sports to our listeners was unmatched and his legacy in the world of sports journalism will forever remain an integral part of our newsroom’s identity,” said Capital FM’s Editorial Director Bernard Momanyi.
Cardovillis was set to go on air for his show on Saturday with an interview with triple 1,500m and world record holder Faith Kipyegon having been one of its highlights.
