Arsenal put five goals past Bolton in the first round of the Carabao Cup as they begin their hunt for a trophy.

Mikel Arteta shuffled his squad for the game after a hard-fought 2-2 draw at the weekend against Manchester City.

Raheem Sterling made his first start for Arsenal since joining on loan and made an instant impact, scoring in the 5-1 win over Bolton.

As it happened

Mikel Arteta made a lot of changes to the Arsenal side that drew 2-2 against Manchester City with just four players keeping their place in the starting line-up.

There are also big changes for Bolton, as Ian Evatt made seven changes to the side that thrashed Reading 5-2 on Saturday.

Arsenal started the game brightly, controlled the possession in the first 15 minutes and got the first goal.

Ethan Nwaneri played a cross from the right, which Scott Arfield airkicks. It lands to Declan Rice, who picks his spot from 18 yards out.

Arsenal kept pushing again and got the second goal when Raheem Sterling plays a great low ball from the left and Ethan Nwaneri slots into an empty net.

The second half started and Arsenal’s youngest player in history, Nwaneri, doubled his tally for the night.

Bolton were caught playing it out from the back and Declan Rice fed Ethan Nwaneri, whose 16-yard shot squirmed through the keeper.

Bolton got a goal back to reduce the deficit to two from a nice counter-attacking play. John McAtee, in his own half, sent Aaron Collins away, one-on-one and he rounded the goalkeeper before slotting home.

The Gunners made it four on the night from a Raheem Sterling tap-in. Bukayo Saka sent two defenders down to the ground and then hammered the ball across the box. The keeper spilt it and Sterling taps into an empty net from four yards.

The fifth goal came in the 78th minute when Sterling displayed nice skills to beat his marker and hit the ball towards goal, which the keeper parried towards Havertz, who scored from close range.

The Gunners controlled the game till the final whistle and thrashed Bolton 5-1 to move to the next round.
