Martin Odegaard has urged his Arsenal teammates to remain united and fight for the title
Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard has urged his teammates not to let the disappointment of losing to Sporting CP in the UEFA Europa League derail what has been a good season for the Gunners.
Odegaard keen to finish season well
Odegaard was an extra-time substitute and scored Arsenal’s first penalty in the eventual shootout loss, as Sporting became only the second Portuguese side to claim victory away to Arsenal.
The 24-year-old midfielder stressed that despite the loss, the Gunners’ season has still been a positive one and urged his teammates not to forget that as they enter the most crucial point of the season.
Speaking after the match, Odegaard said, “We have to remember it's been a great season, it's a big blow to go out of this competition. But now we look forward to the league, that's all we can do now.”
Odegaard preaches unity
He also urged his teammates to stay united and remain in high spirits despite Gabriel Martinelli's missed penalty, asking them to forget about the loss and move on as a team.
“We win and lose together. It doesn't matter. When we're winning everyone is happy, when we lose we have to pick up the spirit. We win and lose together,” he concluded.
Arsenal’s loss is bittersweet, as the Gunners can now pay undivided attention to the Premier League title chase, even though they would surely have preferred to win both competitions.
With Manchester City breathing down their necks, and only 11 matches to go, the Gunners need all the focus they can muster for what is set to be an exciting end to the Premier League campaign.
