Luke Shaw thinks Manchester United are suffering from success
Manchester United full-back Luke Shaw has blamed the club’s humiliating 7-0 defeat against Liverpool in the Premier League on the team’s recent mentality following the triumph in the EFL Cup final over Newcastle.
Manchester United suffering from success
Manchester United celebrated their first trophy in six years with a convincing 2-0 over the Magpies just a week ago, and Shaw believes that the celebrations and the success have gotten to the players’ heads and that this has caused the drop in performance at the club.
Manchester United succumbed to their joint-biggest losing margin in the loss to Liverpool after conceding six second-half goals to a free-scoring Liverpool side, in what Shaw believes to be an after-effect of the club’s recent cup success.
Speaking to MUTV, Shaw said, "It was completely unacceptable, our standards have clearly dropped since we won that trophy, and in the last couple of games, we haven't been our normal selves."
‘We showed no personality and no mentality’ — Shaw
He also appealed to his teammates to get back their winning mentality and also shared his manager’s sentiments that the performance in the second half was not nearly good enough.
"We need to find the good things we were doing before and bring them back because this hurts a lot, and it's really unacceptable what we did in that second half," Shaw continued, before adding, "We showed no personality and no mentality."
Since winning the EFL Cup, Manchester United have played twice. The first, a 3-1 win over West Ham in the FA Cup, and the second, the humiliating 7-0 loss to Liverpool in the Premier League.
On both occasions, Manchester United were accused of being lethargic in their approach to the games, a trait they got away with against West Ham but were severely punished for against Liverpool.
Shaw did not play against West Ham but featured for 90 minutes against Liverpool and saw first-hand the awful personality and mentality that affected the poor result.
