Ipswich defender Axel Tuanzebe was the victim of a freak accident at home when he almost lost his thumb after being smashed by a glass while washing dishes.

Ipswich defender Axel Tuanzebe nearly lost his thumb following a freak kitchen accident that left him needing surgery.

His manager Kieran McKenna revealed over the weekend that the defender required an operation on a hand injury that forced him out of the Premier League clash against West Ham.

According to the Daily Mail, the former Manchester United almost lost his thumb when a glass smashed him while he was washing dishes at home.

As per the outlet, one of the shards deeply lacerated Tuanzebe's hand, seeing him require urgent medical attention.

There were concerns at the time that Tuanzebe could lose his thumb as a result of the incident but doctors were able to save him following surgery.

Tuanzebe has been a key member of Ipswich since their impressive run in the Championship that led to Premier League promotion and had started all six games of the new season before the injury ruled him out of the contest against West Ham.

“He's done a hand injury, a very unfortunate accident,” McKenna on Saturday while explaining the defender’s absence.

“He's had surgery and will be out for a while. It's not going to be a couple of weeks, probably longer. There are still discussions with the specialists.

“He's naturally a miss with the way he's started the season. He's going to be out for a little while.”
