£20 Million Reasons: Why Mo Salah Chose Liverpool Over Other International Club Offers

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah opted to stay at Liverpool over other big-money offers from elsewhere and there are a number of reasons that informed his decision.

Mohamed Salah ended speculation over his Liverpool future when he penned a new two-year deal.

Salah’s fresh terms were revealed on Friday and according to the Dailymail, he will earn £375,000 per week after the club broke their own rules to hand him a new contract.

Liverpool have a policy of not offering contracts to players over 30 but Salah was an exception given what he has given to the club and is still producing.

The Reds could not fathom losing their talisman for free and the backlash from fans would have been massive, something that increased the pressure on the powers that be at Liverpool to keep the Egyptian winger.

Extending Salah’s stay fends off interest from Saudi clubs with Al-Ittihad having made a £150 million bid that was rejected in 2023 by Liverpool.

Salah would have earned much more in Saudi, where an offer of more than Cristiano Ronaldo’s £3 million-per-week was on the table, but his decision to stay at Liverpool is motivated by other factors.

Mo Salah’s desire for more on-pitch success

With Liverpool on course to win the Premier League title, Salah has seen enough to be convinced that it is best staying at Anfield if he wants to enjoy further success.

This is because Liverpool have become even a better team under Arne Slot since he replaced Jurgen Klopp and with a few quality additions to the squad, they could be winning the Premier League again and Champions League next season.

Having lifted eight trophies already and a ninth one all but guaranteed, Salah, who is Liverpool’s top scorer with 32 goals and 22 assists across all competitions this season, knows this is the place to be if he wants to continue challenging for silverware at his age.

The other reason that has made Mohamed Salah extend his deal at Liverpool is the fact that he and his family are already settled in Liverpool.

In his eighth season with the Premier League club, Salah knows and loves the city and does not feel it is the right time to uproot his family from the North West of England for an adventure somewhere else.

Extending by two further seasons gives him time to plan himself accordingly before he finally leaves in June 2027 when he will be 35 and coming to the end of his career.

Anfield cut-status too hard to leave for Mo Salah

Mohamed Salah enjoys cult-status at Anfield.

Mohamed Salah admitted the love shown to him by Liverpool fans was too good to lose out on and he decided to repay their loyalty by staying for another two years.

"It's a special moment always when you play at Anfield. There is no place like it,” Salah said after penning his new deal.

“The warmth you feel inside. The song before the game. Everything about it, every time you score a goal and they sing my song, it's something special. And the story will continue..."

The story will truly continue and the Egyptian king can be sure of receiving more love from Anfield starting with this weekend’s match against West Ham as the Kop know he will give them everything he has left before closing his chapter in two years’ time.

Mo Salah on course to Premier League’s GOAT status

Liverpool legend Mohamed Salah can become the second best player in Premier League history.

Meanwhile, the allure of becoming the Premier League’s best-ever player must have also played a part in Mohamed Salah’s decision to stay at Anfield.

With 182 Premier League goals in 281 games, Salah is tied with Manchester City legend Sergio Aguero and ahead of Thierry Henry (175) and Frank Lampard (177), while he is just three behind Any Cole, who he is likely to overtake this season.

Only a nasty injury of an unlikely drop in form will keep him away from catching Wayne Rooney (208) and Harry Kane (213) among the league’s leading scorers which will leave him second only to the legendary Alan Shearer, who has 260 Premier League goals.

Salah is also racking up assists and he already has 17 in the league and 22 across all competitions this season with his overall Premier League tally being 86 that leaves him in 10th place.

Few can bet against him catching Rooney, who is fourth on the assist charts with 103, during his next two years at Anfield.

Can Mo Salah become Liverpool’s all-time top scorer?

Liverpool and Premier League legend Mohamed Salah celebrates at Everton.
Mohamed Salah is the third on the all-time top scorer list for Liverpool.

Mohamed Salah has netted 32 goals in all competitions and 27 in the Premier League this season which leaves him on course to winning his fourth Golden Boot Award in eight years.

That has taken his Liverpool tally to 243 goals in 394 games which leaves him third on the all-time top scorers list for the club.

While his Anfield legacy is already intact, Salah will be looking to catch Roger Hunt, who managed 274 goals in 466 games, although Ian Rush, on 339 goals from 653 games, will remain unchallenged at the top spot.
