Against all odds, Police FC strolled to the Uganda Premier League title in 2005 under coach Sam Timbe and then went to stamp their golden era with a CECAFA title the following year in Tanzania.

The other time they came close to winning a silverware in recent times was in the 2002/03 season when they lost to Express 3-1 in the Uganda Cup final.

They now have another chance to be on the good side of history if they go on and beat Vipers Sports Club in this season's Uganda Cup final in Lira on Saturday, 3rd June.

They have already suffered another setback after failing to gain promotion back to the Uganda Premier League.

But their head coach Angelo Lonyesi who was assistant to Sam Timbe in the glory years of 2005 and 2006, wants the Cops to pick inspiration from that triumph.

"This is not the first time that Police is in a final," Lonyesi, seated beside Vipers assistant coach Richard Wasswa in a pre-match press conference, reminded of Police's history.

"We won the league [in 2005] and then went up to the final of the CECAFA [Club championship] in 2006, which we won."

"So," he adds, "we are going to play it like a final that it is without minding about the fact that they've just won the league title."

Vipers are playing their third consecutive final in the Cup after beating BUL FC 8-1 in the 2020/21 season before losing to the same side 3-1 last year.
